Ohhh your poor post-holiday liver. It’s probably in pain right now. Having done several 21 and 30-day detoxes, and having been sober for 11 months at one point (you know, the whole baby making thing) I have a set of tools to help me successfully complete a month without drinking that I hope will support you. Foods for the liver Greens, duh. Beets and beet juice. Since beet juice is gross, I juice them with carrots and oranges. The liver detoxes the body, so we want to help it out with watery foods: Celery Cucumber Watermelon Apples See below for…

lunch at the park

Sigh. I received some bad news guys. My nutritionist has strongly recommended that I incorporate more animal-based protein and healthy fats into my diet, and as a proud weekday vegan, I’m obviously a little sad about it. LONG STORY SHORT: I went to see a nutritionist for help solving a few issues including chronic fatigue, hormonal breakouts with bouts of moodiness/sadness. I thought it was the London weather and homesickness, but it turns out I’m anemic, which is not helping my hormones and is affecting my brain and therefore mood. The fastest way to get back on track is changing my…

pitta balancing smoothie

Ayurveda, meaning “life-knowledge” in Sanskrit, is a holistic system of traditional medicine that looks at one’s constitution to identify balance and health, or imbalance and disease. I wrote extensively about Ayurveda and my Ayurvedic consultation here, but the gist of it is that every person has a primary dosha (like DNA, a set of elemental forces that make you who you are) and maintaining balance in your dosha is a crucial factor to health and well-being. My dosha is PITTA – VATA and as you can guess from the title of this post, it’s out of balance. WHAT IS PITTA…

Buddha tea

I recently had the chance to try Buddha Teas, a brand from Cali specializing in organic teas that benefit the body and mind. You know that I’m all up in organic’s business, and usually that implies dealing with plain packaging and weak branding – but hey, if it’s for the good of the world and my body I put my advertising hat to the side. When I opened my box from Buddha Tea I was surprised to find gorgeous tea boxes complete with helpful info (how to brew the tea, the level of caffeine and a little story about the flavour) as well as adorable…

Beet smoothie recipe

Beets are one of those things that you want to eat ’cause they’re good for you, but you can’t be bothered to prepare them. My lazy girl solution? Drink ’em. Beets are a good source of carbohydrates and natural sugars, making them a great veggie when you need to boost your stamina (swap your 3PM coffee with this smoothie or drink it before a heading to the gym). They also contain nutrients that lower blood pressure, fight inflammation, boost immunity and detoxify the body. Here’s how to make this beet smoothie: With a juicer, juice a few beets and carrots, and…

good vibes

It’s the most wonderfullll timmmeeee of the yeaaarrrrr, and I’m talking about DETOX time!  I have a few posts on the blog here about preparing for a detox, but there a couple of things I want to add this time around. 1) Set an intention. If you want to give a little effort to feel better, do a cleanse for 7 days. If you want to change your life, do it for 21 days. It takes about 3 weeks to get over a habit and begin a new one, so the 21-day cleanse truly is game changing. However, if you have…

hangover cure

I’ve been making rather merry lately and with NYE just around the corner I thought I’d share my go-to hangover cure. Follow these steps and I guarantee you’ll feel less terrible – trust me, I have a lot of experience; I’m Irish and Scottish after all. BEFORE BED: Eat and drink a big ass glass of water (obvi). I suggest eating something with carbs, like crackers. Got left over pasta in the fridge? Even better! A banana also works. Oh and ladies, take off that makeup. Somehow crusty day-after mascara makes a hangover worse. AS SOON AS YOU WAKE UP: Drink…

Tofu scramble

Brunch is my favourite meal of the week and I was relieved to find vegan and gluten-free recipes in my cookbooks and online. This tofu scramble recipe also makes a tasty protein addition to salads. – 2 ounces firm tofu, crumbled (1 to 1.5 packages) – 2 tablespoons of EVOO – 1 cup finely diced white onion – 1/2 bunch of asparagus cut 2 inches in length (no ends) – 1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil, diced – 3 tablepoons nutritional yeast – 2 tablespoons wheat-free tamari – Pinch of sea salt – 1/4 tablespoon turmeric – Ground pepper…

feng shui

I’m passed week two of the 21-day cleanse and it’s time to pour some of this positive energy that the detox has given me into my home. The principles of Feng Shui involve harmonizing the human experience with the surrounding environment. It’ about optimizing the energy flow in your space to get more energy, balance and prosperity from it. Although I’ve only recently started to learn about Feng Shuing my home, de-cluttering and cleaning the space are the first steps. So my focus going into the third and final week of the detox is to cleanse my space as I’m…

That colossal amount of nuts and dried fruit is for the week, not just that day

As a gal who loves to train on my lunch breaks during the work week, my appetite can be quite voracious. I eat more often than my 6’4 fiance. Seriously. But I keep the pounds off by choosing healthy snacks with nutritious benefits. Here’s an example: MORNING Tall glass of water and lemon. My fav green juice. Herbal or green tea. Then a bowl of organic or home made gluten-free cereal or granola with almond milk. 1st SNACK A vegetable and fruit smoothie 2nd SNACK Berries GYM Aerobics, dancing, weigh training, yoga, whatever makes me happy that day! Followed by…
