I was reading one of my yoga textbooks this morning and a passage blew my mind (blow and mind are intended puns – more on that in a sec). In the 90s we were constantly reminded to take care of our brains thanks to anti-drug PSAs and my pals Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod from Body Break. As we’ve entered into an era when taking care of our minds is more important than ever –thanks to loss of brain cells as we age and the new reality of competing with technology and global talent for jobs – it seems as though we’ve forgotten…

As part of my yoga teacher training we have to do a 40-day sadhana practice. Sadhana translates to “a means of accomplishing something” and is a discipline undertaken in the pursuit of a goal. So that means that we’ll be doing 40 straight days of yoga and taking 30 minutes every day for ourselves to explore all facets of our practice. This can include: Asanas (postures) Pranayama (breathing exercises) Meditation Chanting/mantra repetition Karma yoga: volunteering or helping people Jnana yoga, study: watching a video or listening to a podcast from a yoga or mindfulness teacher, reading about yoga, studying its philosophy…

It will get stuck in your head for…

5th chakra

This month we are working on our 5th chakra in my yoga teacher training, the chakra at the throat. The 5th chakra is called Vishuddha, which means pure or purification, and is the energy centre in the body that affects the throat, thyroid, rate of metabolism and vocal cords. WHAT IS THE 5TH CHAKRA & WHY SHOULD YOU CARE The Vishuddha chakra is responsible for communication and self-expression in writing and speech, truthful and pure relationships, and the ability to surrender personal will to divine will. It governs how we are able to connect our heart towards the Anja Chakra…

Yoga in Torres del Paine, Chile

“Yoga is a practical method for making one’s life purposeful, useful and noble” – B K S Iyengar I started my 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training at Studio Breathe in October and I have to say, it’s the nicest thing that I’ve ever done for myself. Not only am I deepening my asana practice, but I’m reading a lot of interesting material that is challenging me to think and behave differently. When I show my friends the amount of books I have to read and homework I have to do each month, I often get the perplexed look of “isn’t yoga just a bunch of…

Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga. It’s one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, developed about 5,000 years ago in India. Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge) that is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body and spirit. An ayurvedic approach treats each individual, taking into account his/her own unique psychological, emotional, and physical conditions. Imbalances in the body are identified and a personalized recommendation including diet, lifestyle practices, yoga, medicinal herbs, meditation and massage therapy are suggested to correct…
